Astronaut Discloses Emotional Distress After Wave of Online Abuse Post-Spaceflight
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her battle with depression after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
The 34-year-old activist – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in April, which also featured well-known figures.
The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who questioned its cost and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, recalling a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the aftermath of the landing.
She described the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she confessed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on gynecological science and conducted tests during the mission, said everything she had worked for – including her scientific research and years of training to the historic significance of her heritage – was overshadowed under the avalanche of misogyny.
She is most acclaimed for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of sexual assault survivors.
Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after being assaulted during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
The Fog Begins to Lift
Months following fulfilling her dream, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose kindness pulled her through. “Your support rescued me,” she wrote.
She concluded that amid the criticism, important benefits had emerged from the mission, including spotlight on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
About the Mission
The self-operating New Shepard rocket departed Texas in April, carrying the historic roster on a brief suborbital flight that exceeded the Kármán line of outer space.
The diverse crew also comprised leaders in multiple disciplines.
