The White House disclosed the initiation of federal worker layoffs on Friday, making good on prior threats linked to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to extend into its third straight week.

Formal Statement and Early Information

Russell Vought wrote on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the official procedure for terminating staff.

While the official provided no details on which agencies were affected, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that layoff warnings had been distributed within that department. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security representative noted that layoffs would also occur at the CISA. Also, a labor organization for federal workers announced that members at the Department of Education would be affected by the reduction in force.

Union Response and Court Actions

Labor representatives cautions that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on services used by the public and vowed to contest the moves in court.

“It is disgraceful that the administration has exploited the funding lapse as an excuse to illegally fire numerous employees who deliver essential functions to communities across the country,” stated a national union president, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

The largest labor federation in the US responded to the announcement, declaring, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Funding Battle

Congressional Democrats have refused to vote for a Republican-backed bill to restore funding unless it contains provisions related to health policy. Following multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, meaning the standoff is not expected to be ended soon.

During a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, blasted opposition lawmakers for not supporting the GOP bill, which was approved in the lower chamber on a largely partisan basis.

“This is the last paycheck that government employees will see until Washington Democrats decide to do their job and reopen the government,” the speaker stated. Beginning shortly, American service members, who often live on tight budgets, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Judicial and Practical Limits

Last week, unions sought a temporary restraining order to prevent the government from implementing any layoffs during the shutdown. Additionally, a court official directed the administration to disclose details on termination strategies, impacted departments, and if any federal employees had been recalled to execute staff reductions.

A report argued that a government shutdown limits the ability of the government to conduct terminations, referencing guidance that admitted any long-term staff cuts need to have been started before the funding expired.

Impact on Workers

These terminations took place on the same day that federal workers got only a incomplete payment for the end of the previous month but excluding the start of October, since funding lapsed at the start of the period.

Max Stier, the head of the advocacy group, condemned the gridlock’s impact on federal employees.

This is unjust to make federal employees suffer because our elected officials in Congress and the White House have not succeeded to keep our government open and operational,” the advocate stated. “Our air traffic controllers, VA nurses, wildland firefighters and food inspectors are not responsible for this government shutdown.”

The irony is that lawmakers and senior White House leaders are still receiving salaries amid the funding gap.
